HUNTINGTON —
New developments keep Camden Park hopping with excitement.
This year, the park, more than 100 years old, will be the site of the Wayne County Fair, scheduled to begin Tuesday and continue through Friday.
The horse show was Saturday in Wayne and the beauty pageant was Saturday at Wayne Community Center.
Gates will open each day at 4 p.m. Opening ceremonies will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday at 6 p.m., rock music will be presented by duo Crisp and Davis.
Music will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday by the country artists Robert Trippett and the Starlight Band.
The bluegrass bands Bottomline, Bobby Maynard and Breakdown and Broad Hollow will perform at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Friday, the final day of the fair, will include such children’s games as sack races, three-legged race, watermelon seed spitting and bubble gum blowing contests and egg toss and water balloon toss.
Gospel music will be at 6 p.m. with the Hatley Family, Hinson Girls, the Jackson Family and Gospel Heritage.
Admission is $12; children younger than 3 are admitted free. A four-day pass is $35. Parking is free.
The park added a new pendulum ride this year called the Rattler, in which riders are suspended from an overhead axis to fly head over heels as they swing and spin. The ride accommodates 16 and includes a light package that is activited after dark.
The park, on U.S. 60 West, has more than 30 rides, a Kiddie Land and offers entertainment and live music throughout its season.
Owned by the second generation of the Boylin family, Camden Park, the only amusement park in the state, began from a carousel at the end of a trolly line in Huntington in the late 19th century. It was developed as a picnic area by the Camden Interstate Railway in 1903 and became a family amusement park in 1950.
