GRAYSON —
Youth animal exhibitors will compete for ribbons and top auction bids, while motor events will provide evening entertainment at the Carter County Fairgrounds this week.
New events and returning favorites are in store for fairgoers this week at the Carter County Fair, which kicked off Monday.
A full slate of motor events will this year include dirt drag racing, pitting all-terrain vehicles and dirt bikes in a quest for acceleration on a dirt track, according to fair board treasurer Cindy Gibson. It and go-cart racing start at 8 p.m. Thursday.
With the truck tug returning this year, souped-up pickups will go head to head — or more precisely, tail to tail — with each other in the motor arena at 8 p.m. Saturday.
There is also motocross racing, a mud run and the ever-popular demolition derby. They are at 7:30 tonight, 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 p.m. Friday, respectively.
The numbers are up this year for youth animal exhibitors at the fair, 4-H extension agent Rebecca Konopka said. That is because more children are participating in 4-H. “The program is definitely growing. Since 2009 we’ve seen a big increase. It’s word of mouth. As kids show they tell other kids about it and recruit them because they had such a good time with it,” Konopka said.
The beef, chicken and rabbit show will be at 6 p.m. today. Lambs, goats and swine had their show Monday. The auction will be at 6 p.m. Thursday and Konopka expects spirited bidding. “The community always supports us and usually pays the kids off for their hard work,” she said.
Family Night competitions on Wednesday also are popular, Gibson said. They start at 7:30 p.m. and include watermelon eating, husband calling, frog jumping and best-dressed pet.
Another eating competition is the pizza-eating contest at 8 tonight. The contest is one of speed, not quantity, Gibson said. Competitors race to be the first to consume an entire pizza.
A perennial favorite is the Bear Hollow Wood Carvers Show at 7 and 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Some of the carvings of the chain-saw artists will be auctioned during the intermission of the demolition derby Friday.
Carvings in the past have included eagles, Harley-Davidsons and Kentucky Wildcats, Gibson said.
Other events include gospel music at 7:30 p.m. today, country music at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, bluegrass music at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and classic rock at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
The best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl contest will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, and concerts by Harry and the Hoehandlers and Dustin Burchett and Southern Ground.
