ASHLAND —
A new child care center at Ashland Community and Technical College is almost ready to open.
Weather and other construction issues had slowed progress on the center, but workers are putting the finishing touches on it now, according to director of advancement Frank Salisbury.
The last jobs to do include moving in furniture, finalizing permits, landscaping and cleaning up.
The center, on a hill across Ramey Street from ACTC’s city campus, will provide child care services for ACTC students, faculty and staff, and will take children from outside the college as space permits.
Salisbury expects the center to open in September and there will be a grand opening in October.
The 6,500-square-foot center includes rooms with large colorful floor tiles of blue, green, yellow and lavender for babies, toddlers and prekindergarten children. Ceiling fans are equally bright in primary colors.
Faculty and staff offices between the classrooms have one-way observation windows allowing monitoring of the children.
Each room has a fire exit door leading to the outdoors.
The main entrance is equipped with magnetic security locks.
The lower floor remains unfinished and will stay that way until more money can be raised. The center was financed through ACTC’s foundation and bids came in too high to complete the lower level, Salisbury said.
When the foundation can afford it, more restrooms and a large indoor play area are planned.
Paving is complete in parking areas and workers are preparing the playground area. Play equipment is on site and ready for installation.
The center will serve a dual purpose. Students in ACTC’s early childhood education program will get experience working with children.
