ASHLAND —
Two Ashland homes have been heavily damaged in a fire that started early Saturday morning, spreading from one structure to the other.
No one was injured in the blaze and both residences had working smoke detectors, said Ashland Fire Department Capt. Philip Walters.
The homes at 3230 and 3228 Hampton Street caught fire shortly before 4:30 a.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but firefighters say they know it started in a second flood bedroom of the home at 3230 Hampton then spread to the attic of 3228 Hampton.
Firefighters were able to quickly contain the fire, keeping it from spreading to other homes that were also close by. Homes in the South Ashland neighborhood are very close together. The homes at 3228 and 3230 were side-by-side, separated by less than three feet. Both were ballon frame construction, which allows flames to spread quickly from floor to floor within the walls.
Walters said a man living at 3230 Hampton was home when the fire started but had fallen asleep downstairs. He escaped before calling 911. A family inside the home at 3228 was also alerted to the blaze by working smoke detectors, but were still inside when firefighters arrived.
“Both homes were heavily damaged,” said Walters, adding neither was inhabitable at this time. “The left (3230) has a lot of fire damage, but the right one (3228), the attic was heavily burned and part of the roof collapsed. The first floor of both structures have a lot of water damage,” he added.
According to fire department reports, the home at 3230 sustained more than $50,000 in damage while 3228 sustained approximately $28,000 in damages.
Walters reminded Ashlanders that the city provides free smoke detectors and installation to homeowners. “It’s a good program, free smoke detectors and we install them at no charge. You can’t beat that,” he said. Residents can call (606) 327-2035 to schedule an appointment or for more information.
