CATLETTSBURG —
A number of Boyd County residents spent a cold night Tuesday because of an electrical outage.
The outage occurred about 11:45 p.m. when a line burned in two on 34th Street in Catlettsburg, said Brent Webster, director of the Ashland Boyd County Catlettsburg Emergency Management Agency. Kentucky Power crews didn’t have power fully restored until between 4:30 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, he said.
Webster said Kentucky Power’s website indicated about 1,800 customers in the Catlettsburg area were initially affected by the outage. However, he said crews subsequently had to take other customers in the city’s outskirts off line in order to repair the damaged line, which likely pushed the total to more than 2,000.
Low temperatures Tuesday night and Wednesday morning hovered just above the 10-degree mark. To assist affected residents, the EMA opened a “warming station” at the Boyd County Courthouse to provide some respite from the cold and to give people on oxygen a place to plug in their machines, Webster said.
About a half-dozen people showed up at the courthouse during the course of the night, Webster said. The EMA also transported several residents to the hospital and provided portable generators for a couple of others, he said.
Webster said there likely would have been more distress calls had the outage not occurred at an hour when many people were already in bed asleep.
