IRONTON —
An Ohio man killed himself Sunday after first firing shots at his daughter’s residence and at a police officer.
Roger W. Crisp, 44, of Waterloo, used a handgun to put two .22-caliber rounds into his own chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lawrence County Coroner’s Office.
According to Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless, the events preceding Crisp’s suicide began shortly before 3 p.m. when the sheriff’s department received a report of someone shooting at a residence in the 2700 block of County Road 181 from a moving vehicle. The residence was that of Crisp’s daughter. She and her father had been arguing for several days, Lawless said.
Officers from the sheriff’s department, Ironton, Coal Grove and South Point police departments and Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the incident. As they approached, the Coal Grove officer spotted Crisp’s vehicle on County Road 181 and signaled for him to stop. Crisp refused to do so and drove back to his daughter’s residence and pulled into the driveway, Lawless said.
Crisp then got out of his truck and fired a pair of shots with his revolver, Lawless said. One hit the trailer, lodging in a wall without passing through it. The second struck the windshield of a vehicle parked in the driveway.
Crisp then grabbed a Mossberg .270-caliber bolt-action rifle out of his truck and fire three shots in the direction of the Coal Grove police cruiser, which was parked behind his truck and was occupied by an officer. One of the rounds lodged in the hood of the cruiser, Lawless said.
Crisp then got back into his truck and closed the door. Officers surrounded the vehicle and tried to negotiate with him, but he refused to respond. Two more shots were heard, and officer watched through binoculars as Crisp slumped over the wheel of his vehicle.
Crisp’s body was sent to Columbus for an autopsy, Lawless.
No law enforcement officers discharged weapons and no others were injured in the incident, the sheriff said.

Not guilty plea in death of Boyd baby
