RUSSELL —
Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital pain management specialist Harry Bell, M.D., is performing a new minimally invasive procedure that offers rapid and lasting pain relief in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis.
Chronic back and leg pain because of lumbar spinal stenosis is a problem affecting many. It leads to decreased mobility and overall reduced quality of life. Until now, treatment options were limited to narcotic drugs, injections or surgeries requiring hospitalization and prolonged recovery.
The new procedure performed by Bell is known as minimally invasive lumbar decompression. Bell performs the procedure at the OLBH Same Day Surgery Center.
“MILD relieves pressure on nerves in the lower spinal canal helping to reduce chronic back and leg pain and improving mobility,” Bell said.
MILD is performed by removing bone or tissue causing pressure on nerves through an opening about the size of a pencil. “The structural integrity of the spine and surrounding muscle is maintained and no implants are left behind,” Bell said.
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthetic and light sedation. Only a small bandage is required. Patients go home the same day and are able to resume activities within a few days. Many experience significant relief within hours of the procedure.
Bell is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist who practices at Bellefonte Advance Pain Physicians in the OLBH same-day center.
