Russell should be a bloom town in spring

Gardners club plant tulip bulbs from Frankfort

RUSSELL — Tulips from the state capitol building in Frankfort will be blooming in Russell next spring, thanks to a group of dedicated gardeners and state Rep. Tanya Pullin.

Members of the Greenup County Master Gardeners club planted about 100 bulbs Saturday at the small veterans’ memorial across from the Russell Senior Center. The tulips had been planted on the capitol grounds and when they were removed at the end of the season, a patron of the center asked Pullin if she could wangle a few for the center.

Pullin came through with more than 350 bulbs, enough for the center, the Greenup County War Memorial in Wurtland, the Greenup County Extension Service office, and the new veterans’ cemetery near EastPark, said Nanette Stevens, secretary of the gardeners’ club.

Stevens and fellow club members Connie Wilburn and LeeAnn Snedegar put in the bulbs, which will bloom in splashes of yellow, red and purple in the spring. Autumn is the optimal time to plant tulips, Stevens said.

Saturday’s planting serves a double purpose, brightening the view for seniors at the center and beautifying a memorial to American servicepeople. “This gives us a way to honor our veterans while helping to beautify the city,” she said.

The gardeners’ club has about 30 members of which about 15 are active. Associated with the extension service, it shoulders responsibility for plantings at the war memorial and other sites.

New members can join the club by completing a training program and offering volunteer time. The extension service holds biannual classes conducted by extension specialists, agents and other horticultural experts.

Members become proficient in Botany, entomology, propagation, pesticides, plant diseases, soil, fertilizer, composing and landscaping.
