Carter receives emergency federal funding

By MIKE JAMES

GRAYSON — Carter County will receive $25,442 this year under the federal Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program.

The money will be parceled out to area agencies to supplement their other funding sources, said Robert L. Caumissar, chairman of the local board.

Local agencies must be non profits and able to demonstrate capability to deliver emergency food, shelter or both, Caumissar said.

The allocation for 2010 is 2 percent less than in 2009, but the decrease is not significant, Caumissar said.

In the past, the local board has distributed the funding to Bethany House, Good Samaritans, Northeast Kentucky Area Development Council, Salvation Army, Grahn Community, First Church of Christ and others, according to Caumissar.

The board also works with Shelter of Hope in Ashland and a homeless shelter in Rowan County because they serve Carter countians, he said. Carter County does not have a homeless shelter.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for funding should contact Caumissar at (606) 474-9522 or at 301 W. Main St., Grayson, KY 41143.
