There’s going to be a party for princesses at Plaza Nazarene Church on Saturday.
The inaugural Biblical-based “Party Like a Princess” will put the emphasis on ages 4 through sixth grade, according to organizer Alma Toney.
“We want them to know it’s OK to be beautiful, but true beauty comes from the heart,” Toney said.
Fifty-two girls are already registered and there’s room for more, Toney said. However, a girl who registers late may not receive a T-shirt.
“I’m pleased with the number we have registered, but we’ll handle more if they come,” she said. “This is our first time doing this and we’re excited about if you can’t tell.”
Kelly Daniels, who co-pastors Portsmouth Church of Nazarene with her husband, wrote the program with a child psychologist and will be speaking to the girls and their mothers about inner and outer beauty.
The girls will hear stories about heroines of the Bible, Toney said.
“All this stuff you see for little girls on TV is horrible,” she said. “We need to get to these kids early. You see what’s happening to so many of them. All little girls like to dress up.”
The girls will have their hair styled, receive facials and manicures and be treated to fine dining, Toney said. There will also be a live band.
Toney said the idea was born from a ladies’ tea at the church in June.
“We did it up right with the cucumber sandwiches and the whole thing,” she said. “But I’m 75 years old and can’t do this myself.”
Women rallied around the idea with an army of 30 volunteers at the ready for Saturday’s event from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
“This is the first time we’ve done it and I wanted to make sure it went over really well,” Toney said. “Hopefully it will become something we do every year.”
The church is at 400 Diederich Blvd. Registration is available through Facebook at Party Like a Princess. There’s an online link for registration.
