SOUTH SHORE —
The South Shore Volunteer Fire Department will celebrate its 60th anniversary with an open house at the fire station from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday. There will be refreshments and station tours. A fire truck inflatable will be available for children.
The department was established in 1952 as a result of the dissolution of the Fullerton Civic Service Club. Members of the club decided to use the funds in the treasury to start a fire brigade, and donations were also sought from the public.
Some of the men responsible for starting the department were Carl Morton, Kenneth Ratliff, Marion Bennett, Matthew Warnock, Stanford Harvey, Everett Couch and James Hannah.
Because of support from taxpayers in the South Shore Fire Protection District, the department has relocated from a one-bay building behind the old Kenneth Ratliff Market to a modern, six-bay station on South Shore Drive.
The department owns a 1983 Ford truck, a 1992 KME tanker/pumper, a 1994 Pierce Freightliner pumper, a 1997 GMC brush truck, a 2001 International tanker, a 2004 International pumper, a 2004 Chevrolet command vehicle and a 2010 Chevrolet rescue truck. The department also operates a 16-foot Sierra boat for water rescue, an Amkus Jaws of Life rescue tool, an ISI thermal imaging camera and a Polaris ATV for search and rescue.
The department is governed by a seven-member board of trustees. The members are James R. Osman, chairman; Paul Robinette, treasurer; Randal Collier, secretary; James Timberlake, John Cooper, John Nickell and Kenny Alexander.
