The Upstairs Gallery’s photo contest exhibit opens today in gallery

ASHLAND — Eighty-eight photographs will be displayed tonight at The Upstairs Gallery, all part of the fifth annual Photography Show at the gallery.

Awards will be revealed at 7 p.m. during the First Friday art walk; the show will run through Sept. 30.

Barbara Delligatti, gallery owner, said the show originally was for fine art and photography.

“The photography just kind of blew everything away,” she said. “It really took off. The next year I had a fine arts show and it didn’t work out too well, so I just thought the photography just shined with attendance and also the subject matter was more interesting so I just decided to make it a photography show.”

Delligatti said while some don’t consider photography a fine art, she obviously does or she wouldn’t sponsor such a show.

“Painters take a lot longer, but we don’t have the expense that photographers have and I would have to say I do classify photography as fine art.

“I also feel that photographers do not get the recognition they should, especially in this area, so I help them out by hosting the annual show.”

There was no theme or size requirements for the show.

A reception will be at the gallery from 6 to 9 p.m. today with awards announced at 7 p.m. Morehead photographer Mike Rayburn was judge for the show. He will be present during the reception to answer questions.

Delligatti said it took Rayburn about three hours to decide on winners.

The show typically draws 20 to 25 artists; TUG is home to five photographers.

Pickup dates are Sept. 30 or Oct. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition to tonight’s art walk, the show can be viewed at TUG from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.

The gallery is at 1428 Winchester Ave. in Ashland.
