Lewis man charged in fatal crash
MOREHEAD - A Lewis County man is facing charges of murder and drunken driving stemming from a crash that killed an elderly Rowan County couple.
Police told The Ledger Independent 57-year-old Dallas Carpenter of Emerson was arrested after being indicted on two counts of murder and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Reports from the Morehead Police Department said Carpenter’s blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was 0.21 — over the legal limit.Police say 91-year-old Lena Boyd and her husband, 89-year-old Roy Urvin Boyd, died after the May 25 crash on Ky. 32 in Morehead.
Carpenter was arrested Aug. 23 and then released. His arraignment is Sept. 8. His attorney, Michael Curtis, was out of the office Thursday and did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Man charged with sexual assault
WESTWOOD - A Greenup County man wanted for allegedly sexually assaulting a female juvenile was arrested Wednesday.
Kentucky State Police arrested William Shannon Baldridge, 39, of Flatwoods, at a home in the 1400 block of New Buckley Road after receiving a tip he was at a relative’s residence, according to a news release from the Ashland KSP post.
Troopers also executed a search warrant at Baldridge’s home.
Baldridge was charged with six counts of third-degree rape and one count of third-degree sodomy. He was lodged in the Greenup County Detention Center.
Baldridge is also on probation for a federal offense and could face additional federal charges as a result of the KSP’s investigation.
Greenup meeting moved to Sept. 14
WURTLAND - The board of supervisors of the Greenup County Conservation District has moved the September meeting from Sept. 28 to Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. in the conservation office adjacent to Carmichael John Deere.
Thomas R. Brown ’72 class to meet
CATLETTSBURG - The Thomas R. Brown Class of 1972 will have an open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Catlettsburg-Boyd County Senior Center.
The class will host a reception for retired teachers from Catlettsburg as well as the Boyd County School District. This year’s Labor Day Parade theme is “Learning Through Education.”
Rummage sale set at Greenup church
WURTLAND - Wurtland Freewill Baptist Church will have a multifamily rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Saturday in the fellowship hall behind the church at the corner of Oak Street and Wurtland Avenue (old U.S. 23).

Clerk automobile departments open
CATLETTSBURG - The Boyd County Clerk’s Office automobile departments at all locations will be open regular hours today. The Ashland and Kyova Mall branches will be open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Conservation staff on duty today
FRANKFORT - Most state offices will be closed today as part of the state’s budget-balancing plan to furlough state government workers six days this fiscal year.
But Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife conservation officers will be in the fields and on the water for the beginning of the Labor Day weekend, one of the busiest recreational times of the year.
Gov. Steve Beshear selected today as a mandatory state furlough day in hopes of lessening the impact to residents who rely on state services, and to take advantage of the additional operational savings in decreased energy usage.
The Labor Day weekend is the traditional beginning of the fall and winter hunting seasons. It is the opening weekend of mourning dove season and one of the busiest boating weekends on the state’s lakes and rivers.
Department offices, the information call center, the licensing branch and the Salato Wildlife Education Center will be closed today.
“Our officers need to be out and available as this busy weekend get under way,” said Department Commissioner Dr. Jon Gassett.
“They will do their part in saving money by observing a furlough day at a later time when the impact to the public is lessened.”
