OLBH team wins croquet tournament

WURTLAND — A pair of brothers-in-law from Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital recently claimed first place in the annual Heritage Arts, Science & Tourism Center croquet tournament at the McConnell House in Wurtland.

“It was a family affair,” said spokesman R.J. “Bud” Matheny. “The winning team was sponsored by Our Lady of Bellefonte and the players were Dr. Zack Underwood and his brother-in-law Trey Fyffe. The runner-up team was sponsored by Griffith, Delaney and Hillman CPA’s with players Keith Brammell and his daughter Laura Brammell.

“It was a great day. The weather was perfect,” Matheny said. “Forty teams competed on eight courts with the winners being recognized at the awards banquet which started at 5:30.”

Matheny said a great deal of effort went into the annual outdoor event.

“It took a lot of volunteers to make this possible. The officers and board members from the Heritage Arts, Science & Tourism Center were assisted by the Homemakers from the Greenup County Extension Office. The students from the Raceland High School Beta Club and Spanish Honor Society operated the deadboards and volunteer officials watched over the teams playing on the fields. Terry Fyffe and Chuck Chinn were once again co-chairs of this years event and as always it went off without a hitch. I want to thank all the Sponsors of this years event as well as all the players and volunteers who made this possible.”

Matheny said the Heritage Arts, Science & Tourism Center is seeking people to get involved with next year’s croquet match.

“We are starting to organize for next year’s event and will once again be asking for team sponsors, court sponsors, tent sponsors and advertisers in our program,” he said. “We are also looking for volunteers for our 10 committees that operate the McConnell House throughout the year and we have a job to match everyone’s talent.”
