ASHLAND —
The Ashland Police Department and Kentucky State Police, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, will host prescription drug take-back events from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The APD will provide residents with two locations at which they can drop off expired, unwanted and unused medications for safe disposal. And, at both spots, folks will be able to do so without leaving their vehicles, said Maj. Todd Kelley, commander of the APD’s Technical Services Division.
One of those locations will be the police station on 17th Street. According to Kelley, the APD plan to open both doors of the building’s sallyport, turning it into a drive-through. People with medication to drop off will merely need to turn down the alley next to the station, then pull through the sallyport, he said.
The other location will be at King’s Daughters Medical Plaza B on 23rd Street. A drive-up station manned by an APD officer will be there, Kelley said.
The service is free of charge and anonymous, there are no papers to fill out and no questions will be asked, Kelley said.
At its first drug take-back in April, the APD collected about 200 pounds of medication, Kelley said. across the United States, approximately 276 tons of medications were turned in at more than 5,600 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,300 local law-enforcement partners.
The KSP will collect unused medications at all of its posts, including those in Ashland and in Morehead, on Saturday, according to a news release from the agency’s Frankfort headquarters.
Getting rid of unused medication is important because drugs that languish in medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Studies show a majority of abused medications are obtained from family and friends.
Additionally, authorities now advise the previous usual methods disposing of unused medicines — flushing them down the toilet and throwing them in the trash — both pose potential safety and health hazards.
