ASHLAND —
When the question was posed, “Why do you do what you do?,” art students at Paul G. Blazer High School had the answer and have shared it in an exhibit that opens on First Friday at The 1414 Gallery at TSHD Architects.
The idea originated with a collaborative art project by San Francisco artist Tony Deifell.
Subsequently, job interviewers at Google and Twitter and corporations around the world have posed the same compelling question.
“The results are profound,” Jennifer Spade, Blazer art teacher, said. “This project was a practical lesson in design for my students, but it has also taught me a lot about who they are.”
Students began by writing personal essays to focus their thoughts and enable them to pull out a statement which answers, "Why do you do what you do?" From there, they had to create an image which could be created in any medium, but mostly photography was the chosen format. Finally, text was placed in the image to give the project added expression.
“This is what art is about. We are so bombarded with images on a daily basis that we don't often take time to stop and think about the why behind it,” Spade said. “When you get down to it, self-expression is the component in art that evokes an emotional reaction. Regardless of technical skill, everyone has the ability to express something, sometimes it is hilarious, sometimes sad; sometimes it is a meaningful truth that provides an insight into their lives.”
The 1414 Gallery will debut the exhibit from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday during the First Friday art walk. The gallery is at 1414 Winchester Ave. at THSD architects.
