GRAYSON —
Hundreds of bargain-hunters are likely to be out this weekend for the annual U.S. 60 Yard Sale.
The yard sale, starting at 8 a.m. today and continuing through Saturday, will cover 45 miles through Carter County. The route passes through Grayson and Olive Hill and several smaller communities.
The sale will feature everything from antiques and collectibles to clothing and produce.
“You can find just about anything and everything,” said Mignon Colley of the Grayson Tourism and Convention Commission. “One year, I even saw farm machinery for sale.”
The yard sale usually brings lots of traffic, too, she said.
“The traffic situation is unreal,” Colley said. “People need to be courteous. A lot of times they don’t even get off the road.”
There will be a few “Johnny-on-the-Spots” set up along the highway throughout the county to make it easier for everyone to shop till they drop.
The first U.S. 60 yard sale was in 2002 in Carter County and it has spread to several adjoining counties throughout the years. It is also known for attracting shoppers from across the country.
“Last year, I met some people from Florida who were up here for it (the yard sale),” Colley said.
Those interested in selling are not required to register and must only find a site along U.S. 60 and be prepared by 8 a.m. If the seller does not own the property, he or she must get permission from the property owner. Retail businesses are also encouraged to become involved. Anyone who wants to sell concessions must contact the health department to obtain a permit for food sales.
