Allen named Highlands director

ASHLAND — Carol Rice Allen has been named executive director of the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center.

Allen, whose term started Aug. 1, had been serving as interim director since June, following the resignation of former director Leigh Ann Heineman.

The position of director of the museum is a part-time position.

“I am looking forward to working with the newly elected board of governors and the advisory council, which is a new council that will advise the board of governors,” Allen said.  “We have such tremendous people serving.”

She also noted the staff and volunteers have been great to work with.

“The staff was wonderful in helping me learn the daily routine of the museum. They are dedicated to the museum and are extremely knowledgeable in their field and have remained committed even with the cut in hours of operation due to budget constraints,” she said. “I can't say enough about the three volunteers who give unbelievable hours of time to the museum.  Volunteers are indispensible to us and we can't thank them enough.”

She said the Ladies of the Highlands are an exceptional volunteer group.

“(They are) the backbone of the museum since its conception. They have raised considerable amounts of money to help the museum grow,” she said, adding the group will be in charge of the Christmas Tour of Homes in December.

Allen, a retired educator who taught in the Catlettsburg and Russell independent systems for 27 year, also taught consumer science at Marshall University. She has served at many levels in her professional career, including president of the Kentucky Association of Home Economics Teachers and Greenup County Retired Teachers. She served on a state board under Gov. John Y. Brown Jr.

Allen has volunteered in many area organizations, including the Paramount Women’s Association, the Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Auxiliary board, the Heritage, Arts, Science and Tourism board and the Greenup County Tourism and Convention Commission.

She said her goals for the museum include:

Making the public more aware of the museum’s membership in the Association of Science and Technology Centers, which gives members access to other museums at free or reduced rates, including COSI in Columbus and The Clay Center in Charleston, W.Va.

Encouraging the use of the museum of parties, meetings and other large gatherings.

Becoming partners with area schools to bring programs to students and encourage membership with the museum.

Increasing activities at the museum to increase its visibility in the community.

“We are very grateful to the Boyd County Public Library for partnering with us by offering workshops and other activities at the museum,” Allen said. “This has been a great resource for us.”

In addition, she said she hopes to find alternative revenue sources during slow economic times.

“Our boards have a banner campaign in place which will generate much needed revenue,” she said. “We appeal to the public and businesses to be part of the plaque or banner campaign by calling the museum for information.”

Allen is employed with The Gallaher Group and works in marketing and sales for Bridges Magazine. She is the widow of the late Sen. Nelson R. Allen and the mother of Bobby Allen, Greenup County Tourism director.
