GREENUP — It’s time for the Greenup County Fair.
The fair starts Tuesday and runs through Saturday. Board chairman Jay Sizemore is hoping for a big year, especially in the youth livestock events: last year’s auction set a sales record and Sizemore hopes this year will beat or tie the $133,000 spent in 2008.
This year’s livestock sale starts at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.
Besides the livestock, the fair has some other highlights this year, Sizemore said.
The Miss Greenup County Fair pageant at 7 p.m. Tuesday is going to have a Kentucky Derby theme this year. Watch for plenty of big, fancy hats. It’s at 7 p.m. in the main arena, following the opening ceremonies.
Wednesday night is ride ’em and rope ’em night — the Bar W Rodeo gallops into the main arena at 7 p.m.
Wheels replace hoofs Thursday when the rumble of B and M Motorsports Arenacross hits the main arena at 7:30 p.m.
The truck pull at 7 p.m. Friday promises to be big and noisy: all monster trucks, four classes, professional drivers. “These guys bring a minimum of 40 trucks,” Sizemore said. “The crowd loves them.” It’s in the main arena.
Lawnmower races, introduced last year and highly popular, return this year at 6 p.m. Saturday. Local residents will race their own mowers, some modified for high performance, Sizemore said. Other Saturday events include the antique machinery show at 8:30 a.m., the antique tractor pull at 6 p.m. in the main arena, and the second annual Carol Reed Allen Memorial Gospel Sing at 6 p.m. at the Pavilion.
Gates open daily at 9 a.m.; rides open at 5 p.m. each day. Rides are free with paid admission. Admission is $8; kids 3 and under are free.
Thursday is senior citizen day with $2 admission to those 55 and older. Saturday is kids day with special events for children, prizes and all-day rides for $8.
Greenup’s fair has been growing in attendance and sales for the past seven years, he said. Sizemore expects 20,000 to 23,000 through the gates in the five-day run.
