ASHLAND —
CAReS and The United Way of Northeast Kentucky will host the first class of the Money Matter$ Financial Education Program Wednesday.
The class is designed to help people manage and budget their money, with the ultimate goal of helping people set up their first checking account or get a second chance to overcome banking problems they had in the past.
One in three Kentuckians does not have a checking account, and in March 2013, the government will stop issuing paper checks for Social Security and other government assistance programs. At the end of the class, participants will receive a certificate to take to their bank, where they can then open a free or low-cost checking account, said CAReS Executive Director Trish Hall.
There are many reasons taking the class and establishing a relationship with a bank could be beneficial, Hall said.
“This will show them ways to handle their money — the best way to handle their finances. Some people get their money and immediately just spend it,” said Ashley Traylor, CAReS vista.
“We have lots of clients with no bank account, and they have to spend lots of money on money orders and transfers that you can do for free if you have a bank account,” Hall said.
Participants will also learn how a bank account works and why it is safer to keep money in a bank than in a home, she said.
The class, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the conference room at The Neighborhood, 2516 Carter Avenue, is free of cost and will be taught by a United Way representative. Anyone may take it, but the class is designed especially for those who receive Social Security checks or other paper checks from the government. There will be more classes scheduled throughout the year, Hall said. There is a limit to 25 per class, and all participants must call to make a reservation.
