Louisville —
Seven staff members of The Independent were winners in the Kentucky Press Association’s annual Excellence in Newspaper competition.
A former Independent chief photographer and Community Newspaper Holdings Inc.’s Frankfort bureau reporter, whose work appears regularly in the newspaper, also were among the winners.
The awards were presented Friday during the KPA’s 144th annual convention at the Brown Hotel in Louisville.
Winners from The Independent were:
Kenneth Hart, staff writer, first place in Best Spot News Coverage.
John Cannon, opinion page editor, second place in Best Editorial Page.
Adam VanKirk, night editor, second place in Best Sports Page/Section.
Aaron Snyder, sports editor, second place in Best Sports Column and third place in Best Sports Feature.
Kevin Goldy, photographer, second place in Best Sports Picture.
Pam Holbrook, copy editor, second place in Best Business/Agribusiness Page.
Carrie Stambaugh, staff writer, third place in Best Column.
CHNI News Frankfort reporter Ronnie Ellis received second place in Best Column and John Flavell, former Independent chief photographer, was awarded third place in Best Spot News Picture.
The KPA also installed new officers during its convention. Willie Sawyers, publisher of the London Sentinel Echo and Corbin Times Tribune, was elected president of the newspaper organization for 2013. Scott Schurz Jr. of Advocate Communications in Danville was elected president-elect and Rick Welch, publisher of the Madisonville Messenger, was elected vice president. Loyd Ford, publisher of The Lake News in Calvert City, was installed as treasurer, and John Mura, multimedia manager for the Louisville Courier-Journal, is past president after serving 2012 as president of KPA.
In the news contest, the Todd County Standard, Springfield Sun, Jessamine Journal, Kentucky Standard in Bardstown, Madisonville Messenger, The Advocate Messenger in Danville, Lexington Herald-Leader, Fort Campbell Courier and the Kentucky Kernel (University of Kentucky) were awarded first place general excellence honors in their respective classifications.

Morgan man pleads guilty to assault
A Morgan County man entered a guilty plea in Morgan Circuit Court on Wednesday to second-degree assault charges in connection with the injuries he inflicted upon his wife in April 2011 at their home in Ezel, according to the office of Attorney General Jack Conway and his office of special prosecutions.
