Flatwoods man admits to holdup

GREENUP — A Flatwoods man pleaded guilty Thursday to holding up a check-cashing business in February 2011.

Timothy Ray Martin Jr., 31, admitted in Greenup Circuit Court that he robbed the Cash Express on Diederich Boulevard in Russell.

His guilty plea means he could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison. The crime he admitted usually only carries a 10-year maximum sentence but because Martin has a previous felony conviction, the offense is treated as a more serious felony.

However, he is unlikely to spend that much time in prison. The plea agreement he signed calls for a 10-year sentence, with two of the years actually spent behind bars.

He also will have to pay $951 in restitution and will be placed on supervised probation when he gets out.

Martin will have to undergo a 12-month inpatient rehabilitation after he gets out of jail, which in effect will keep him confined for another year, assistant commonwealth’s attorney Mel Leonhart said.
