Greenup man injured in shooting

GREENUP — A Greenup County man was shot in the leg early Friday morning by one of two suspects who were reportedly trying to break into his car.

Authorities are still searching for the suspects.

The incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. on Augusta Lane, located in Country Club Estates, just outside of Greenup.

According to a Greenup 911 dispatcher, the victim, Larry Smith, heard noises outside his home, went to investigate and found two men trying to break into his vehicle. When Smith confronted the suspects, one of them pulled a gun and shot him in the leg.

Smith was unarmed, according to the dispatcher.

The suspects fled the scene in a white full-sized pickup of unknown make and model with Kentucky tags.

Both suspects were Caucasian males. One was wearing a black jacket and a red knit cap. The other had blonde hair.

Smith was taken initially to Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital and later transferred to Cabell-Huntington Hospital.

The Greenup County Sheriff’s Department is investigating. Anyone with information should contact the Greenup County 911 Center at (606) 473-144 or the sheriff’s department at (606) 473-7037.
