$80,000 doled out for bridge projects

FRANKFORT

Boyd County Fiscal Court will receive $80,000 in County Road Aid emergency funds from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for four bridge replacements.

The project includes bridges on Old Trace Road, Midland Trail, Golden Gate Hill Road and Paddle Creek Road. The repairs will make it safer for school buses and other vehicles.

Boyd County Fiscal Court will be responsible for administering the work.



Free concert at Huntington museum

HUNTINGTON

The Huntington Museum of Art will present a free Music at the Museum concert at 2 p.m. Sunday in HMA’s Grace Rardin Doherty Auditorium.

This concert of contemporary music features Branita Holbrook, soprano; Mary Beth Norman, piano; and HMA Music Artist in Residence Don Williams, clarinet.

The concert is being presented in connection with the exhibit titled “I Don’t Get It: Non-objective Works from the Permanent Collection,” which continues on view at HMA through Jan. 16.

“I Don’t Get It” explores the forms, contexts and theories of predominantly 20th century art independent from our world’s visual references and features works from HMA’s permanent collection of more than 15,000 objects.

Carter Christmas project started

GRAYSON

Project Merry Christmas of Carter County will accept applications between Nov. 2 through 6 and Nov. 9 through 13 at all family resource and youth services centers in the county.

Distribution date for 2009 will be Dec. 19 at the East Carter Middle School. In recent years, the project has been providing Christmas for over 600 children age 12 and under.

Applicant parents or guardians will need to provide Social Security numbers, age, gender, sizes of each child and the total household size and the sources and amounts of income to allow the countywide Board of Directors to make informed decisions as to eligibility.

According to board president Phyllis Davis, Project Merry Christmas is asking the community to be generous as there are fears. “Our numbers may be up and our donations may be down this year,” Davis said, citing the national economy and the high unemployment rate in Carter County.



Salvation Army taking applications

ASHLAND

The Salvation Army will be taking applications for Christmas Assistance for food and/or toys from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Nov. 9-13.

Applicants must have a photo ID, Social Security cards for everyone in the household, copies of birth certificates for children, proof of income and proof of residence.

Individuals can sign up for Christmas assistance with only one agency.

The Salvation Army’s branch serves Kentucky counties Boyd, Greenup and Lawrence and is located at 2212 Carter Ave.

Haunted maze ends tonight

GRAYSON

Small children and those who are faint of heart are warned to stay away from tonight’s final opportunity to navigate the Carter County Corn Maze.

Organizers say the elaborate maze will be filled with things that are “scary, freaky or horrifying.” No flashlights will be allowed,

The maze at the Carter County Fairgrounds on U.S. 60 west of Grayson will be open for the last time this year from 6 to 11 p.m., with tours starting as darkness falls. Tickets are $7.50 a person.

Haunted trail at Laurel Gorge

Schools will hold coat drive

Greysbranch and McKell elementary schools are holding a coat drive the week of Nov. 9-13. The schools are collecting used coats in good condition (without stains or holes) for disbursement to needy families by the schools’ family resource center.

Coats may be dropped off at either school, Cash Express in Greenup or South Shore, the Short Stop, Wright’s Pharmacy, Cooke’s Farm Store, Jenny’s Mart, Goodfellas, McCoy Chiropractor, Stultz Pharmacy and the Greenup County Health Department.



Russell Civic League will honor veterans

Russell Civic League will have a Veterans’ Day Illumination Ceremony honoring all veterans at 7 p.m. on Nov. 10.

It will take place at the downtown Russell Depot at the Veterans’ Memorial plot with Dr. Glennard French, a Purple Heart recepient, as guest speaker.

The public is invited and encouraged to bring a lawn chair.
