Book events set at ACTC, JSF

ASHLAND - Author Allan W. Eckert will be at Ashland Community and Technical College at noon Thursday for a talk and at the Jesse Stuart Foundation from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to noon Friday to sign books.

The author of numerous books about the history of the region, Eckert wrote biographies of Tecumseh, Simon Kenton, Blue Jacket and others. He will speak in the Teleconference Room at ACTC.

Eckert will sign copies of his recent release, “Dark Journey: The Tragic Tale of the Donner Party,” at the foundation. JSF published the book and has rereleased some of Eckert’s earlier works.



Flatwoods council meeting canceled

FLATWOODS - Today’s meeting of the Flatwoods City Council has been canceled. The council will meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 17 at the city building.



Ashland board sets special meeting

ASHLAND - The Ashland Board of Education will have a special meeting at noon Wednesday at the central office.

The board plans to approve an emergency teaching certificate.



Veterans program Nov. 11 at McKell

SOUTH SHORE - McKell Middle School will have a Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 in the gym.



Ashland bridges to close briefly

ASHLAND - Both Ashland bridges over the Ohio River will be closed briefly on Monday for Kentucky Power workers to complete electrical line upgrades.

Each bridge will be closed completely to traffic for about 15 minutes between 8 a.m. and noon.

Intersections will be controlled by law enforcement officials during the shutdowns, officials said.



Parent sought for school boss search

LOUISA - The Lawrence County Board of Education needs a parent member on the screening committee it is forming for the superintendent search.

Parents in the district interested in serving on the committee or who want to nominate other parents may call the secretary at their children’s schools. The deadline for nominations is Friday.

PTO/PTA presidents of the school district will elect the parent representative to the screening committee.

Amateur radio exam Nov. 14

ASHLAND - Examinations for new or upgraded amateur radio ham licenses from the Federal Communications Commission will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 14 at the Salvation Army, 2212 Carter Ave.

A $15 fee is charged per exam. Each applicant must present two forms of identification, one of them a picture ID. The testing is sponsored by the River Cities Amateur Radio Association.
