Mall collecting for River Cities Harvest

Food drive a highlight of Glimcher anniversary

Ashland — Local shoppers who support River Cities Harvest have a chance to win a $500 Visa gift card from Ashland Town Center as part of Glimcher Realty Trust’s 50th anniversary celebration.

Supporters will receive a shot at winning the gift card for every five nonperishable food items they deliver to the mall’s Guest Service Center through Nov. 22.

The food drive to benefit RCH is part of a companywide effort by the mall’s parent company, GRT, in an effort to complete 50 acts of community service within 50 days.

GRT was founded 50 years ago when Herb Glimcher drove from Boston to Columbus with $50 in his pocket, ultimately founding a lumber and building supply company that evolved into a developer of retail shopping centers and later regional malls.

Herb Glimcher retired from the company’s management team in 2005 and his son, Michael Glimcher, has since served as chairman and chief executive officer for the Glimcher team.

“Celebrating our 50th anniversary is a testament to our people,” Michael Glimcher said.

“We’re proud to be a cornerstone in the Columbus community and look forward to continuing to provide access to relevant shopping destinations throughout the country.”

The mall at 500 Winchester Ave. is anchored by Belk and JC Penney, with more than 70 specialty shops, food court and a “soft” play area for children.
