Olive Hill — Kentucky State Police have arrested a man whom they say was driving a vehicle belonging to one of the victims in a double homicide in western Carter County on Monday.
However, the man was not charged in connection with the slayings, according to a news release from the Ashland KSP post, and the agency did not indicate whether he was a suspect in the deaths of the two victims.
Virginia Massard, 49, and Joseph Cox, 27, were found dead in a residence in the 1400 block of Mocabee Creek Road, which is in the Soldier area. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by Carter County Deputy Coroner Ronnie Wallace.
The causes the victims’ deaths hasn’t been released. Autopsies were scheduled to be performed Tuesday at the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort, the KSP said.
During the course of the investigation, detectives were unable to locate Massard’s vehicle, the KSP said. Later on Monday, the car was found in Olive Hill by KSP troopers and officers with that city’s police department.
The man driving the vehicle, David J. Caudill, 33, was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property, driving under the influence and driving on a suspended license. He was also served with an outstanding warrant charging him with flagrant nonsupport, the KSP said.
Later Tuesday state police added charges of receiving stolen property, a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Police also charge that Caudill is a persistent felony offender in the second degree, which would have the effect of adding time to his sentence if he is convicted.
Caudill was lodged in the Carter County Detention Center.
Massard’s and Cox’s slayings are being investigated by KSP Detective Erik Kouns.
