SUMMIT — An 82-year-old Ashland man was killed when his pickup truck slammed into a tractor-trailer Thursday.
Floryan Yakimovicz, of the 2700 block of Seminole Avenue, was pronounced dead at the accident scene by Boyd County Deputy Coroner Rob Garnes.
The accident occurred at 1:40 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 60 and Summit Road, near Boyd County Middle School and Fannin Motors.
Yakimovicz was traveling westbound on U.S. 60 when his Ford extended-cab pickup collided with the trailer portion of a rig that was attempting to turn left onto U.S. 60 from Summit Road.
The impact caused Yakimovicz’s truck to become wedged beneath the trailer and partially collapsed the roof.
Witnesses told Boyd County sheriff’s deputies that the truck had the green light. There were no skid marks or any other indications that Yakimovicz attempted to stop or take evasive action.
Signage on the doors indicated the truck was owned by Central Transport of Warren, Mich. The driver’s name was not immediately available.
There were reports that Yakimovicz’s vehicle briefly caught fire following the collision.
The Summit-Ironville, Cannonsburg and Westwood volunteer fire departments all responded to the accident.
The accident snarled traffic at the busy intersection for a long period. Motorists traveling toward U.S. 60 on Summit Road were detoured across the Fannin Motors lot.
