Kiwanis Club to deliver Thanksgiving baskets

16th consecutive year of food delivery in Greenup County

RACELAND — For the 16th consecutive year, the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County will deliver Thanksgiving food baskets to families throughout Greenup County.

With the delivery of these baskets on Saturday morning, the Kiwanis Club, with help from its Key Clubs at Raceland-Worthington, Russell and Greenup High Schools, and its Builders Club at Russell Middle School, will have provided complete turkey dinners to more than 700 families over the history of the event.

The value of this year’s deliveries is estimated at $2,800, giving the 16 year effort a value of approximately $25,000, the club estimated.

This year’s project is being coordinated by Kiwanian Ted Toponak. The names of the 57 families who will receive baskets this year were obtained through the family resource centers at the three county school systems.

With the aid of a computer mapping program, Toponak has prepared a detailed route map for each of the deliveries, which will be made from Raceland-Worthington High School beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Members of the Kiwanis Club, Key Clubs and Builders Club will fan out across Greenup County to make the deliveries.

The baskets consist of everything needed for a traditional Thanksgiving meal, including at 10-12 pound turkey, potatoes, green beans, corn, yams, stuffing mix, gravy mix, cake mix and more.

The 2009 Kiwanis recipe guide will also be delivered. It contains easy recipes for preparing the items contained in the food basket, as well as ways to deal with the left overs.

The Kiwanis Club buys the turkeys with money raised by its annual Run By The River road race. The food is donated by the members of the clubs.
