ASHLAND — The first baby of 2010 born in King's Daughters Medical Center arrived at 3:02 p.m. on Friday.

James Michael Salyers was welcomed four weeks early by his parents Mary Jackson, 23, of Grayson and James Salyers, 40, of Greenup.

James Michael weighed 6 pounds 2 ounces and was 193/4 inches long. Although early — Jackson said she was told by doctors to expect him around Jan. 28 — James Michael was healthy. He is expected to leave the hospital with his parents on Sunday.

“Everything is good so far, all his vitals are good. He didn’t have to go to the NICU,” said Jackson.

“You get to stay with mommy and daddy,” she said to James Michael who was cradled in her arms faintly crying.

Jackson arrived at KDMC in labor around 8:30 p.m. New Year’s Eve but James Michael waited until well into New Year’s Day to arrive.

“He was wide awake, he was looking around. He got his bottle and went right to sleep,” she said.

The second baby of 2010 born at KDMC arrived several minutes after James Michael, according to hospital staff.
