Work will begin soon on urgent roof repairs to Louisa West Elementary School.
The school, which houses a preschool program, kindergarten and first grade, will receive repairs to the roof to stop leakage, according to James Ellis, director of community education.
The Lawrence County Board of Education approved the repairs Tuesday under a board procedure that declared the issue an emergency. That authorized immediate approval of the repairs rather than going through a lengthy bidding process.
“The building is a transitional facility,” Superintendent Mike Armstrong said. “It is in need of repair and it is likely that further damage could be sustained if we wait for the typical bidding process.”
The board authorized Bri-Den Roofing, which is already engaged in roofing repair elsewhere in the district, to begin the repair work as soon as possible for the sum of $53,700.
The board voted unanimously to approve the repair.
Additionally, the board received update reports from Terry Salyer, who is an energy management specialist, about savings reaped by the district through consumption management strategies and alterations made to buildings in the district.
The district saved almost 25 percent in energy spending through changes in consumption habits and through retrofitting and updating systems in its buildings.
The district has saved about $70,000 so far and anticipates further savings.
