Fairview alumni to gather Sept. 8

WESTWOOD — Mature Eagles will assemble at the Elks lodge at 900 Carter Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 8, for the annual Fairview High School Alumni Homecoming.

“I think this thing started in the mid-’80s, 25 or maybe even 30 years ago. It started out as just a handful of us getting together and we called it our ’70s reunion,” said organizer Jeff Preston, a Fairview graduate whose band CARRIER has performed at every alumni homecoming event.

“The early-on gatherings were in the room at Wildwood Park, and it has mushroomed from there.”

Preston said classmates have since spread the word and now gather in force each year.

“We had over 300 alumni, plus their guests, two years ago,” he said. “That’s the value of a small school. Just because you graduated in ’75 ... you had other classmates.”

Noting Saturday’s gathering will be a reunion for the classes of 1982 and 1992, Preston said all attendees can count on seeing old friends.

“It’s always the same crowd,” he said. “I can expect to see Bill Nolte at the reunion. I know I can count on him to be there.”

The alumni group tries to give a couple of scholarships each year to two seniors, “as well as have a grand ol’ time,” Preston said.

Live music will begin at at 7:30 p.m.; other activities will include “gifts, spirits and a lot of fun,” Preston said. “All alumni and guests are welcome.”

Tickets, available at the door, are $20 a couple or $15 for individuals. For more information, call Preston at (606) 325-8496.
