DANVILLE —
Paul Ryan spent the day with his family, exercising and reviewing briefing books in advance of Thursday’s vice presidential debate here with incumbent Democrat Joe Biden.
His press secretary, Mike Steel, said Ryan began preparing for the debate in the days after the Republican National Convention in Tampa.
His staff prepared two briefing books, one on foreign policy and one on domestic issues, and Steel said Ryan “edited and re-wrote large portions of both.”
Steel said Ryan worked on the briefing books during flights on the campaign trail and the campaign retreated to a three-day “debate camp” in Virginia where former solicitor general Ted Olsen played the part of Biden.
Ryan spent another day and a half this week in Florida preparing for Thursday’s showdown with Biden.
Steel said Ryan stayed overnight in Lexington and planned to drive to Danville – about 40 minutes away – prior to the debate. With him at the hotel are his wife, three children and his mother.
He said Ryan spent a relaxing day with his family, breaking occasionally to review briefing books and for a tuna salad sandwich lunch.
