Children robbed at Poage Elementary

ASHLAND — The following information was taken from Ashland Police Department reports:

Robbery

‰Two juveniles told police they were robbed while playing on the playground at Poage Elementary School.

The incident occurred about 4:30 p.m. The two reported they were approached by a man with a leaf rake, who told one of them to empty his pockets. The youngster complied, and the suspect picked up $12 cash from the child’s pocket and fled.

Endangerment

‰An Ohio woman was arrested Sunday after she allegedly used her vehicle to ram a car occupied by her husband and her two children.

Stephanie K. Anderson, 35, of Chesapeake, was lodged in the Boyd County Detention Center, charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, fourth-degree assault and failure to maintain insurance on a motor vehicle.

The incident occurred about 5:10 p.m. in the 1700 block of Winchester Avenue following what the APD said was a “heated custody exchange” between Anderson and her husband.

Anderson remained in custody on Monday.

Burglary

‰A man on Friday told police someone entered property belonging to him at 4446 Sherwood Drive and removed items valued at more than $4,800, including a bed, fishing and camping equipment, power, hand and air tools, an air conditioner, a pressure washer and a 37-inch LCD TV.

Theft

‰A man living in Gla-Lo Apartments on Friday reported a UPS package containing war gaming figurines and valued at $137 from was stolen from his front doorstep.

‰A woman living in the 2600 block of Blackburn Avenue on Friday reported someone had stolen and forged one of her checks.

‰A man on Friday reported the theft of an 18-speed mountain bike valued at $150 from a location in the 2200 block of Winchester Avenue.

‰Ashland Taxi on Sunday reported the theft of a cell phone valued at $70 from one of its cabs.

‰Boyd County Ford on Sunday reported someone had removed the two back wheels and tires, valued at $3,500, from two 2013 Ford F-150 pickups.

Credit card fraud

‰A man living in the 300 block of 17th Street last week reported someone had used his ATM card to fraudulently withdraw $603 from his bank account.

Identity theft

‰A man living in the 2700 block of Montgomery Avenue on Friday reported someone had used his name to file a fraudulent tax return.

Shoplifting

‰A 28-year-old Wayne, W.Va., man was arrested Friday for allegedly trying to steal merchandise valued at $68.22 from Walmart.

‰A 25-year-old Ashland woman was arrested Friday at Walmart for allegedly attempting to steal merchandise valued at $49.88.

‰A 34-year-old Ashland man was arrested Friday at Walmart for allegedly trying to steal merchandise valued at $29.96.

  • Guitar builder Paul Reed Smith to visit Ashland

    Paul Reed Smith isn’t a rock star, although he does have legions of fans who revere his contributions to live and recorded performances worldwide and his name or initials grace the headstocks of guitars used by some of the most recognized names in rock, jazz and country music.
    The legendary luthier from Maryland will visit Ashland’s 4 O’Clock Rock Guitar Shop on Wednesday  to inspect their collection of his instruments. Store owner Dave McCoy said he was almost immediately overwhelmed with responses after announcing Smith will be at the shop at 2328 Greenup Ave., to meet fans and sign autographs starting at 6 p.m. A crowd is expected to be there, McCoy confirmed Friday afternoon, reporting he expects PRS owners, collectors and fans alike to be in the crowd awaiting Smith’s appearance.

  • Wurtland OKs raising residential sewer rates

    Wurtland sewer rates for residential customers are going up. Over the next three months, the rates will gradually rise by 30 percent.
    The rate increase will affect approximately 500 customers and is necessary in the wake of the closure of Sun Chemical, known as PCI, in February. The residential rate increase follows a prior industrial rate increase of 100 percent, which was implemented in March.

    As many as 10,000 crickets were released by a group of students at East Carter High School on Thursday morning. By Friday, seven seniors had received disciplinary action.
    Although school administrators cannot comment about those disciplinary measures, sources say that these students will not be allowed to participate in this morning's commencement.
