‘Fire in Mountains’ prayer rallies set
PIKEVILLE - Residents from across southern and eastern Kentucky will join for an hour of prayer at three locations at 3 p.m. Sunday.
“Fire in the Mountains” events are for people of all faiths who are concerned about drug abuse, addiction and recovery.
Prayer rallies will be simultaneously at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center in Pikeville, Somerset Christian School in Somerset and the Old Corbin Civic Center.
Each program will feature prayers led by representatives from many segments of the community as well as speakers and music.
Tree sales will benefit research
RUSSELL - Morning Pointe, a senior living residence at 1000 Addington Drive, is hosting a Festival of Trees to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
Trees will be displayed starting today, with a silent auction through Nov. 30.

Campbell council meeting canceled
RACELAND - The Campbell Elementary School council meeting scheduled for today has been canceled.
A special meeting at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at the school will feature discussion about the Comprehensive School Improvement Plan, committee reports and test data.
Ashland native voted president
ORLANDO, Fla. - Ashland native Dr. Tim Maynard, 58, pastor of Fruit Cove Baptist Church in Jacksonville, was elected president of the Florida Baptist State Convention on the second of its two-day annual meeting Tuesday in Orlando.
Of a reported 896 messengers registered Tuesday morning, 640 votes were cast for president. Maynard received 374 or 59 percent of the votes, and Clayton Cloer, pastor of First Baptist Church of Central Florida in Orlando, received 264 or 41 percent of the votes.
Maynard is the son of Peggy Maynard and the late Clarence Maynard of Ashland.
Scouts to collect peanut butter
ASHLAND - River Cities Harvest is teaming with local Girl Scouts to help feed the needy this holiday season.
Observers of this year’s “Christmas Miracles” Christmas parade are encouraged to bring jars of peanut butter, which the Scouts will collect as they walk alongside their float in the parade.
The peanut butter will be taken to RCH, a local charity that helps feed those in need through the collection and distribution of perishable and nonperishable food items. The charity will distribute the peanut butter to area food pantries.
Peanut butter donations also may be dropped off at the RCH suite in The Neighborhood, 2516 Carter Ave.

Greenup County American Legion Post 43 facing charges
American Legion Post 43 in Greenup County was charged with two counts of selling alcohol in a dry territory and two counts of promoting gambling in the second degree, according to a release from the Public Protection Cabinet’s Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and the Department of Charitable Gaming.
