Barn of Horrors

4-H haunted house opens Friday at fairgrounds

COALTON — The Boyd County Fairgrounds will be filled with screams of horror instead of the normal mooing and oinking of livestock for the next several weeks.

On Friday, the Boyd County 4-H Fright Night haunted attraction will open its doors for three weekends. For $5, which will benefit the 4-H Teen Council, visitors can experience “a good scare” for a good cause.

The haunted attraction, which centers around one of the fair’s barns, will be open from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday through the last weekend of the month.

Becky Stahler, the Boyd County extension agent for 4-H, said council members are very excited about the event, which has been in the works since August. “This is a scary haunted house,” she said. “I would not recommend it for children 12 and under.”

To create the haunted house, the council teamed with Jason Miller and his friend, Daniel Hall, who have been creating fright events for years.

Miller and Hall worked with the council to create the new attraction. The haunted house is set up in a pole barn at the UK Franks Extension Community Building on the fairgrounds.

“They had a ton of lumber and stuff for us to build with and I have a lot of props, so we just threw it together and built it. We converted an old pole barn to a haunted house,” Miller said. “It was extremely tough and a lot of man hours, but they (customers) are going to get a good scare.

“Daniel is an excellent tour guide who takes the people through. There will be hidden scares and gore. It is not intended for small, small children. We have a lot of wild, crazy people working in it that just love this time of year.”

A former 4-H’er, Miller said using his passion for horror to raise money is his way of giving back. “That is what it is all about,” he said.

Miller’s business, Mowman’s Lawn and Landscaping, is the major sponsor of the event. He said there is a reason the haunted attraction is one of the cheapest in the Tri-State.

“We have kept the cost low to raise money and bring more money in there for the 4-H,” he said. “We have kept our fee moderate so people can bring their entire families to it. We want people to come there and enjoy it.”

Stahler said the council hopes to make the event an annual fundraiser if it is successful. Proceeds will pay for the council’s leadership training, an annual trip and a donation to 4-H camp.
