NEW YORK — Two umpires with northeastern Kentucky ties have been selected as part of the National League and American League championship series crew.

Sam Holbrook, the umpire who made the controversial infield fly call that enraged the Atlanta Braves and their fans in the NL wild card game, was picked as part of the crew for the AL championship series. Originally from Morehead, where he was a standout athlete at Rowan County High School, Holbrook now resides in Lexington.

Greg Gibson will be part of the NL championship series crew. He is a graduate of Rose Hill Christian and still resides in Boyd County.

Jeff Kellogg is crew chief for the ALCS and was behind the plate for Saturday night's opener between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers. Rob Drake was at first, Holbrook at second, Jeff Nelson at third, Gary Cederstrom in left, and Mike Winters in right.

Gary Darling heads the NL championship series crew and was slated to work the plate for Sunday's opener between the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals, with Chris Guccione at first, Bill Miller at second, Gibson at third, Ted Barrett in left, and Jerry Layne in right.

All 12 umpires worked in the new wild card round. Drake and Guccione have never worked beyond the division series.

Guitar builder Paul Reed Smith to visit Ashland

Wurtland OKs raising residential sewer rates
Wurtland sewer rates for residential customers are going up. Over the next three months, the rates will gradually rise by 30 percent.
The rate increase will affect approximately 500 customers and is necessary in the wake of the closure of Sun Chemical, known as PCI, in February. The residential rate increase follows a prior industrial rate increase of 100 percent, which was implemented in March.
