MOREHEAD —
Morehead State University’s Kentucky Folk Art Center has announced its upcoming exhibition, “2 x 20: Works by Kentucky’s Finest Working Folk Artists.”
The opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The exhibition will remain on display through Feb. 2.
The exhibition features 40 works by self-taught artists from across Kentucky. A wide variety of media and styles demonstrates the strength of contemporary Kentucky folk art. Many of the works are offered for sale. The artists whose work is represented include: Barbara Burton, Brent Collinsworth, Bruce New, Donny Tolson, Eileen Stockham, Janice Harding Owens, Janice Miller, Jim Gary Phillips, Jo Ann Butts, Joan Dance, Lavon Williams, Lonnie and Twyla Money, Marvin Francis, Minnie Adkins, Monica Pipia, Robert Morgan, Tad DeSanto, Thad Pinkney, Tim Lewis and Willie Rascoe.
“We wanted to do an exhibition that surveyed the state of folk art in Kentucky today,” said Adrian Swain, KFAC artistic director. “A few years ago, people were asking us, ‘What will happen when all the folk artists have passed away or retired?’ This show demonstrates that Kentucky folk art has changed. But, folk art has never been static. It’s been evolving all along.
“The impulse to make art exists among people in cities as well as rural areas and is felt by individuals of every ethnic identity. This exhibition confirms our belief that folk art is broader and more diverse than people tend to think. The work of these 20 artists illustrates the ongoing changes in contemporary folk art. Change in our world has wrought a dynamic energy and excitement in the art being produced here. Kentucky still leads the nation in the production of great self-taught artists, and this exhibition makes that more than evident.”
The center is a cultural, educational and economic development service of MSU. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
