GREENUP —
Family resource centers at Greenup County’s three school districts have received annual contributions of $750 each from the Kiwanis Club of East Greenup County.
Kiwanis President Ron Fraley presented the checks to Becky Roark, representing the Russell Family Resource and Youth Service Center; Tricia Hine, representing the Raceland-Worthington Family Resource Center; and to Stephanie Phillips, Jody Justice and Emily Stephensen, representing the Greenup County school system. Phillips is coordinator at Wurtland, Justice at McKell and Stephensen at Greenup.
The schools use the money to provide students with basic school supplies, clothing, shoes and even dental services.
“Your donation is wonderful,” Roark told the club. Besides the basic everyday items students need, she said Kiwanis money has been used to pay for caps and gowns for graduates, parenting classes and a brown bag food program done in cooperation with Bridges Christian Church.
Stephensen said Greenup schools use some of the money to support a Guardian as Parents program. She said grandparents and even great-grandparents are raising children. The program helps them with this task.
“We want to thank you for your generosity and for helping the community the way you do,” Raceland-Worthington’s Hine told Kiwanians.
She said the Kiwanis money will support the everyday items plus will help with holiday assistance, a clothing locker, a parents support group and a new coupon basket program designed to help parents and guardians save money on food and health products.
