Students from area compete at state Cup

Louisville — A few area students placed on the podium last weekend at the state Governor’s Cup championship in Louisville.

None placed higher than fifth place overall, however. Russell High was fifth and Russell Middle eighth in overall scoring, according to official results posted on the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition Web site. West Carter Middle placed 10th overall.

In quick recall, the quiz competition, Russell pushed farther than any other area school, making it to the quarterfinal round.

No area students won first place, according to the site, but there was a smattering of second-place finishes. They included:

‰Alexandra Knipp, West Carter Middle, composition.

‰Tanner Bowen, Louisa Middle, social studies.

‰Alexander Christie, Russell High, science.

Other notable finishers included:

‰West Carter Middle, fifth place, future problem solving.

‰Claire Lyon, Russell Middle, third place, arts and humanities.

‰Ali Wilt, Russell Middle, 10th place, arts and humanities.

‰Tanner Sammons, East Carter Middle, sixth place, science.

‰Claire Lyon, Russell Middle, eighth place, language arts.

‰Daniel Sorrell, Russell Middle, seventh place, math.

Russell High, seventh place, future problem solving.

Katie Rabelais, Russell High, fourth place, arts and humanities.

Savannah Tate, Russell High, sixth place, language arts.
