WHEELERSBURG —
A Wheelersburg man was killed Thursday in a shooting at his home that stemmed from a dispute over payment for a piece of equipment.
Scioto County Sheriff Marty Donini identified the victim as Steve Holsinger, 33, of the 9500 block of Old Gallia Pike.
According to the sheriff, Holsinger was shot after he pointed a gun at a man who’d come to his residence, along with his father, to repossess an unspecified piece of equipment for which Holsinger hadn’t finished paying.
The incident occurred about 10:20 p.m. Donini said Tyler Staker, 22, of Portsmouth, and his father went to Holsinger’s residence to retrieve the item, which Holsinger had purchased from their business.
The Stakers had been at Holsinger’s for more than a hour, knocking on his door in an attempt to get Holsinger to come out and turn over the equipment, Donini said. Eventually, Holsinger did come out onto his porch with a gun in his hand and in an agitated state, he said.
Witnesses told detectives investigating the incident that Holsinger put the gun into his pocket for a short period of time, then became upset, pulled it out again and told the Stakers they had three seconds to get off his property.
Holsinger then raised the weapon and pointed it at Tyler Staker. At that pointed, Tyler Staker pulled out his own gun and shot Holsinger several times, Donini said.
Holsinger was lying in the yard when detectives arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was sent to the Montgomery County Morgue for an autopsy. Evidence is being forwarded to the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation & Identification in London, Donini said.
No charges have been filed in the incident. After consulting with Scioto County Prosecutor Mark Kuhn, Donini said it was determined the case would be presented to a grand jury at a later date.
The sheriff said his department’s investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should contact Detective Jodi Conkel at (740) 351-1091.
