Grayson council may adopt gravel road into street system

GRAYSON  — Grayson City Council discussed the possibility of officially adopting a stretch of gravel road behind First National Bank into the city’s street system on Tuesday during a regular session at the newly constructed Police Station.

Representatives from Lodge Pro Properties, the company that currently owns that stretch of land, voiced concerns about the proposed path the road might take through their property.

A spokesman for Lodge Pro said the company had no issues with the idea of the road being adopted into the city system but would object to a road path that would cut across their parking lots.

Council decided to survey the property and consult with John Lands, the city’s code enforcement officer, to develop an official design for the proposed roadway before taking any further action.

Mayor George Steele then introduced a proposed executive order for the Council’s review and input that would prohibit city employees from using take-home city vehicles for off-duty personal use.

“If you don’t draw the line somewhere, how far will it go?” said Steele as he introduced the order.

Council member Pam Nash, however, had some reservations about a blanket policy prohibiting non-official use of city vehicles.

“There have to be some exceptions. What if you’re the only one that can pick your child up but you’re not allowed because you’re in a city vehicle?” Nash said.

After lengthy debate, the mayor decided to make adjustments to the order and bring it back at next month’s regular meeting.

“This policy will be issued as an executive order until we can get an ordinance in place,” Steele added.

In other business, Council approved a financing agreement with City National Bank for the purchase of a new tractor and bush hog. Total cost for both vehicles will be $51,667 which will be repaid over 60 months with an interest rate of 2.875 percent.

The next regular Council meeting will be Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. at the Grayson City Building.
