Kentucky’s Governor’s Cup set to begin Jan. 19

ASHLAND — It’s that time in the school year when academic ability trumps athletic prowess — or at least gets the same kind of attention.

Teams practicing since the start of school, and even over the summer, are looking forward to the first rounds of Governor’s Cup, Kentucky’s premier interscholastic academic competition.

The first matches are at the middle-school level and will take place Jan. 19. Host schools for the district competition are East Carter, McKell, Boyd County and Louisa middle schools.

High schools have their district meets Jan. 26 at Russell, Paul G. Blazer, West Carter and Magoffin high schools.

Top middle-school performers compete at the regional level Feb. 2 at Russell Middle School; high schools have their regional matches Feb. 16, also at Russell.

Elementaries also compete at the district and regional levels; their matches will be March 2 and March 23, respectively. Elementary district locations are McKell, Holy Family, Poage, Summit, Blaine, Sandy Hook and Olive Hill elementaries. Regional locations are Russell McDowell Intermediate, Heritage Elementary and Highland Elementary.

The best of the middle-school and high-school performers will go to Louisville March 16 through 18 for the state final competition. Elementary students don’t compete at the state level.

All of the district and regional competitions, which are on Saturdays, include written assessments in five areas — arts and humanities, mathematics, science, social studies and language arts, plus a fast-paced quick-recall tournament, which is the only part of the competition open to the public.

Two other events, future problem solving and composition, are on the preceding Tuesdays.
