ASHLAND —
After several days of bone-chilling but dry weather, the Tri-State was expected to receive the year’s first significant blast of snow and ice today.
The National Weather Service’s Charleston forecast office on Thursday issued a winter weather advisory for snow for the region for 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.
The forecast was calling for snow during the day today, with total accumulation of 2 to 4 inches expected. High temperatures are expected to reach only about 30 degrees.
The storm was expected to develop from southwest to northeast, according to the weather service.
Freezing drizzle and snow are expected in the evening, changing to all snow after midnight. The chances of precipitation today and tonight are both 50 percent, according to the weather service. However, tonight will not be as cold, with lows only dipping into the lower 20s.
The weekend forecast is calling for isolated snow showers Saturday morning, tapering off to flurries later in the day, with significantly colder temperatures Saturday night. Sunday will be mostly sunny, but there’s a 30 percent chance of more snow Sunday night.
A winter weather advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties, and that motorists should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility.

Not guilty plea in death of Boyd baby
A Powell County teenager accused in the beating death of an infant pleaded not guilty to the charge Friday.
Brett T. Thompson, 18, of Stanton was arraigned Friday in Boyd County Court.
