Smothering Ashland ‘D’ gives little room in dominating performance, 47-7

ASHLAND — As soon as Russell quarterback Lance Evans took the snap in shotgun formation, his fate was already sealed.

Ashland safety Evan Yongue and defensive linemen Cade O’Bryan and Trace Armstrong stormed in and buried Evans before he could make a move.

The third-quarter play typified Ashland’s defensive dominance at Putnam Stadium.

On a muggy Friday evening, the Tomcats were positively suffocating in routing the Red Devils 47-7.

O’Bryan and company seized control of the line of scrimmage, holding Russell to three yards rushing and a couple of first-down passes through 3 1/2 quarters.

“I was really proud of our defense tonight,” said O’Bryan, who helped lead the charge from his end position. “We had not put a whole defensive game together, but we did tonight.”

Ashland had 14 stops for no gain or negative yardage, and forced the Red Devils to punt nine times.

Russell coach Ivan McGlone couldn’t recall the Red Devils’ offense ever being manhandled so thoroughly.

“We couldn’t do anything,” McGlone said. “I think it was the worst offensive performance since I’ve been here. Ashland had a lot to do with that.”

Russell’s Googie Hayes returned the opening kickoff 52 yards to Ashland’s 37, but the Tomcats set the tone with a quick defensive stand. On fourth-and-five, defensive tackle Josh Ellis and linebacker Shannon Justice dropped Bryant Cathey for no gain.

Ashland’s defensive front, linebackers Justice and Slater Swift, and Yongue consistently swarmed Russell ball carriers.

“That whole group did an outstanding job,” Ashland coach Leon Hart said. “We played physical, read our keys, flew to the football and shut them down.”

The Tomcats, moving to 4-0 on the season, also enjoyed a huge big night offensively despite three turnovers in the first half. They rushed for a whopping 533 yards on the night.

Freshman running back Quinton Baker darted and dashed for 227 yards and three touchdowns, while wideout Malik Massey supplied two long scoring plays.

Baker had TD jaunts of 51, 11 and 17 yards, following excellent blocking and showing a variety of spin moves. He ran for more than 100 yards in each half.

On Ashland’s first play from scrimmage, Massey went 68 yards to the end zone untouched on a double reverse.

“As soon as coach Hart told me that was going to be our first play, I was grinning from ear to ear,” Massey said. “This team would be nothing without our line. When I got the ball and looked upfield, all I could see was green grass.”

Despite the Tomcats’ terrific defense, they led only 13-0 at halftime after Baker went 51 yards midway through the second quarter. Ashland lost a fumble and two interceptions before the intermission.

“We were shaky the first half with turnovers, but the defense was just relentless,” Hart said.

Ashland didn’t waste its opportunities in the second half, scoring on four consecutive possessions as the lead ballooned to 41-0.

Baker scored from 11 yards out to cap an 80-yard drive in 12 plays to start the half. The Tomcats did it all on the ground, including eight carries from the dynamic Baker.

On the Tomcats’ next offensive series, quarterback Aaron Elam connected with Massey for a 43-yard score on a deep slant.

“Elam kind of overthrew me, but I didn’t want to disappoint him or coach,” Massey said. “I had to go all out to catch up to that one. I’m starting to click with him. I feel this was our breakout game.”

Hart was happy to see Massey back to his big-play self.

“We needed to get Malik more involved,” Ashland’s coach said. “He hadn’t touched the ball enough the first three games.”

Jeremy Jackson added a 25-yard scoring run in the third quarter and Baker’s 17-yarder made it 41-0.

Russell (1-2) avoided a shutout on reserve running back Bobby May’s 2-yard TD with 1:49 left following an Ashland turnover.

Ashland backup quarterback Hunter Prince broke loose for an 86-yard touchdown to close out the Tomcats’ fireworks.
