Lloyd — The atmosphere reminded Greenup County coach Tim Fraley of days gone by.
“Huge crowd, tournament-like feeling,’’ Fraley said. “It looked like old times in this rivalry.’’
A Musketeers victory in overtime against Russell provided the icing on the cake for Fraley.
Greenup County couldn’t buy a free throw in the fourth quarter, but outscored the Red Devils 11-2 in the extra period to win 55-46 at the Greenhouse.
“We’re getting better at the right time,’’ Fraley said after the Musketeers handed Russell its first district defeat of the season. “This team has been through some adversity with my suspension. I’m proud to see them play with this kind of intensity.’’
Greenup County (11-9) scored the first seven points of the overtime period after missing eight of nine free throw tries in the fourth quarter. Those missed opportunities allowed Russell to rally from seven points down.
“Coming out strong in overtime was a big momentum swing,’’ Fraley said. “I thought it lifted us and deflated them.’’
Dustin Linthicum and Michael Hampton made baskets to help send the Musketeers out to a 51-44 advantage in OT. Russell didn’t score until inside the final minute.
“We made a nice comeback to get back even, but two points in overtime is not going to win many games,’’ said Red Devils coach Merle Kidwell.
Both teams had their struggles at the foul line. Greenup County finished 10-for-24, while Russell was somewhat better at 18-for-32.
“I told the kids after the game that you can look at the free-throw line and see where we lost the game,’’ Kidwell said. “Greenup County can say about the same thing.’’
The Musketeers led 42-35 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, but left the door with a string of missed free throws. In the last 40 seconds, Greenup County failed to connect on the front end of three bonus situations and then missed two more attempts while clinging to a 44-42 lead with eight seconds left.
Russell freshman Austin Hunt banked in a shot with no time remaining to force the overtime.
The tight contest was tied at the end of the first and third quarters before Hampton helped make the difference.
The bulky, 6-foot-5 junior had all of his 12 points and eight rebounds in the second half and overtime after sitting down with two early fouls.
“I challenged Mike in the third quarter after he missed a block out on a free throw,’’ Fraley said. “He came alive. This was probably his best job of finishing around the basket in the two years I’ve been here.’’
Trey Williams scored 13 points to lead Greenup County in scoring. He missed the Musketeers’ earlier 48-39 loss to Russell.
Russell (8-12) got 17 points from freshman Kyle Skaggs. Justin Davidson provided 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Tanner Alexander scored 10 points.
The Red Devils shot only 30 percent from the field.
Greenup County gave us trouble with their zone because of their size,’’ Kidwell said. “Coach Fraley really has them playing good basketball right now. Maybe we will see them again.’’
