Central starts atop first Super 7

Staff report

The Independent’s first Super 7 football power rankings of northeastern Kentucky teams has Johnson Central exactly where it spent much of 2007 — on top.

The No. Golden Eagles picked up a solid win on the road in Week 1 on Friday, going to Breathitt County and coming out with a 26-14 victory.

Breathitt County was 13-1 in 2007, making all the way to the Class 3A state semifinals.

Central (1-0) will host St. Thomas More (Canada) this week before opening district play against Bryan Station in Week 3.

At No. 2 is Russell — another team that spent time atop the 2007 Super 7 rankings — after the Devils won at Greenup County 49-13.

Senior Drew Abrams, with 170 yards rushing, two touchdowns and a pick on defense, helped Russell continue its recent dominance of the Musketeers. The Devils have won eight straight against Greenup County.

Russell (1-0) hosts Boyd County this week.

The Lions start the rankings at No. 4 after getting back at East Carter on opening night.

The Lions (1-0) returned a shutout favor, 20-0, after losing 7-0 to the Raiders in 2007.

Senior quarterback Zac Wilson scored all three of the Lions’ touchdowns.

At No. 3 is Raceland after another win, their third straight, against Ashland.

The Rams (1-0) are open this week.

Ashland (0-1) comes in at No. 5 and will host Pikeville this week.

At No. 6 is Greenup County (0-1), which is at Letcher County Central on Friday.

No. 7 Fairview rounds things out after a 27-0 win at Lewis County. The Eagles (1-0) host East Carter this week.
