Top two battle it out, stay atop poll

Staff report

The Independent’s top two teams remain the same this week despite locking horns a week ago today.

One-loss Elliott County defeated West Carter 77-65 on Jan. 6 and stays atop the poll. The Comets stay put at No. 2.

Elliott County picked up two more wins after beating the Comets — over Lewis County (95-47) and Anderson County (76-72) in the Kentucky Preps Classic. The Lions will begin play in the All “A” regional on Saturday but not before a region matchup at East Carter tonight.

After the loss to Elliott County, West Carter got a 20-point win over Greenup County. The Comets play at Fairview tonight.

Fairview and Bath County, combining for a 4-0 record last week, each move up a spot — to No. 3 and No. 4.

The Eagles have West tonight before opening the All “A” regional against Elliott County.

Ashland falls a couple spots to No. 5 after an upset loss to Russell and another loss to Spring Valley (W.Va.). The Tomcats host Rose Hill in a district game tonight.

The No. 6 through No. 9 teams all stay the same: Menifee County, East Carter, Rose Hill and Greenup County.

The No. 10 team is a new one. Morgan County evened its mark a 5-5 with two wins last week.
