Fairview’s Elijah King and teammate Mason Rutherford have gotten attention both on and off the football field.
The two have been playing under a temporary court injunction after both were initially ruled ineligible by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association because they were expelled from Huntington High School as juniors. And KHSAA Bylaw 6, Section 4d states that “a student is ineligible for athletics in this state if he or she transfers from another state if the student was or would have become ineligible in the state from which he or she transfers.”
Earlier this week, a hearing was held in Boyd County Circuit Court in which both sides presented their cases for and against the injunction.
According to a WSAZ-TV report, the KHSAA claims that when the students enrolled at Fairview, they were ineligible under the rules and regulations of Huntington High School. However, the plaintiff’s side claims that the expulsion had been lifted.
A ruling has not yet been made.
Fairview coach Nathan McPeek said none of it has served as a distraction as an important game against Raceland approaches.
“As the head coach I’m the main leader,” he said. “We’re focusing on the game plan at hand (against Raceland). We have to control the controllables. They’re eligible to play. Those kids are good kids and they’re going to line up and play.
“I’ve been very pleased with how mature all of the kids have been about it.”
