Indianapolis —
Sara Hieneman was stellar against a good hitting Illinois team, but her performance was just half of Wednesday’s pitchers duel in Little League Softball Central Region Tournament pool play in Indianapolis.
Illinois (River Forest) threw 11-year-old Maeve Nelson, who was one of the toughest pitchers Russell-Flatwoods 11-12-year-old All-Stars have faced, according to coach Rod Hieneman.
Each pitcher tossed a two-hitter, but Illinois beat Kentucky state champion Russell-Flatwoods, 2-1. Illinois advanced to the region semifinals, while Russell-Flatwoods’ run ended with a 1-3 record in Indy.
“These girls are state champions. They represented the community of Russell-Flatwoods and District 6 greatly,” Rod Hieneman said. “I can’t say enough about the girls and the job they did on a national stage.”
Russell-Flatwoods is planning a ceremony in the coming weeks to celebrate its accomplishments.
Nelson, Illinois’ youngest player, held Russell-Flatwoods scoreless until the sixth inning, when Maggie Jachimczuk drove in Jaclyn Holmes.
Alexis Maynard and Ali Hartman accounted for Russell’s only two hits.
Nelson, who stood about 5-foot-9 and threw in the mid- to upper-50s (mph), struck out eight and walked three.
Sara Hieneman fanned four and issued two free passes. Illinois scored one in the second inning and another in the fifth.
